Used BMW inspection

BMW pre-purchase inspection

A used BMW drives beautifully when it has been looked after, and gets expensive quickly when it hasn’t. Most of the costly BMW problems give small warnings first: a rattle on a cold start, a smell of oil, a cooling fan that runs too long. A seller won’t point them out, so an independent check matters.

Our inspectors know where to look on BMWs from the 1 Series to the X5, and we check the car at the dealer or the private seller before you hand over any money.

Known problems

What goes wrong on a used BMW

Common on 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, X3, X5. Not every car has these faults. They're what we look for.

Timing chain wear on N47 diesels

The 2.0 diesel used in many 118d, 120d, 320d, 520d and X3 models from about 2007 to 2014 can wear its timing chain, which sits at the back of the engine. A rattle at idle is the warning. Putting it right means taking the engine out, so it’s a big bill.

Timing chain guides on N20 petrols

The 2.0 turbo petrol in many 320i, 328i and 520i models from about 2011 to 2016 has a history of timing chain guide wear. Again, listen for a whine or rattle.

Oil leaks

Rocker cover, oil filter housing and sump gaskets often leak as BMWs age. Oil from the filter housing can soak the auxiliary belt, which can fail.

Cooling system

Many six-cylinder petrol BMWs use an electric water pump and thermostat that can fail without much warning. Check for coolant loss and warning messages.

DPF and EGR on diesels

Diesels used for short trips can block their particulate filter and EGR valve, which shows up as limp mode and warning lights.

xDrive and run-flat tyres

On four-wheel-drive models, the transfer case can judder on tight turns, sometimes because of mismatched tyres. Many BMWs run on run-flats with no spare, so tyre condition matters.

Questions

BMW inspection FAQs

Which used BMW engines should I be careful with?

Listen carefully to the N47 2.0 diesel (about 2007–2014) and the N20 2.0 petrol (about 2011–2016) for timing chain noise. Many cars have been fixed or are fine, but you want to know before you buy.

Can you see BMW service history stored in the car?

On many newer BMWs, service records are stored electronically and shown in the car. We look there as well as at the book and invoices, and note any gaps.

How much does a used BMW inspection cost?

From £69.99 for Basic up to £169.99 for Ultimate. The price is fixed, with no travel charge, in London.

Can you inspect a used BMW at the dealer or a private seller?

Yes. The inspector comes to wherever the car is, on a forecourt or at the seller’s home or workplace. You don’t need to be there.
