Used Land Rover inspection

Land Rover and Range Rover pre-purchase inspection

A used Range Rover or Land Rover can be a wonderful car or a very expensive lesson. Air suspension, timing chains on some diesels, and electrical faults are where the big bills come from.
Free MOT check

We inspect Range Rovers, Evoques, Velars and Discoverys at dealers and private sellers, and check the things that matter most on these cars.

Known problems

What goes wrong on a used Land Rover

Common on Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Evoque, Velar, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Defender. Not every car has these faults. They're what we look for.

Air suspension

Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar and Discovery air suspension can leak or wear out its compressor. A car that sits low after standing, or slow to rise, needs a closer look.

Timing chains on 2.0 Ingenium diesels

The 2.0 Ingenium diesel used from about 2015 in the Discovery Sport, Evoque and Velar is known for timing chain stretch. Listen on a cold start.

Crankshaft failure on TDV6 diesels

Some 2.7 and 3.0 TDV6 engines in Discovery and Range Rover Sport models from about 2005 to 2013 suffered crankshaft failures. Engine oil servicing history matters.

Nine-speed automatic

The nine-speed gearbox in the Evoque and Discovery Sport can make jerky or slow changes. Software updates help some cars.

Rear differential on the Freelander 2

Freelander 2 models are known for rear differential and coupling failures.

Electrical faults

Infotainment, sensors and warning lights are common complaints. Check every function works.

Questions

Land Rover inspection FAQs

Should I buy a used Range Rover with air suspension?

Most have it. Make sure the car sits level, changes height smoothly and shows no suspension warnings. Repairs aren’t cheap, so it’s worth knowing first.

Which Land Rover diesel engines have problems?

The 2.0 Ingenium diesel (from about 2015) for timing chain stretch, and some earlier 2.7 and 3.0 TDV6 engines for crankshaft failure. A good service history lowers the risk.

How much does a used Land Rover inspection cost?

From £69.99 for Basic up to £169.99 for Ultimate. The price is fixed, with no travel charge, in London.

Can you inspect a used Land Rover at the dealer or a private seller?

Yes. The inspector comes to wherever the car is, on a forecourt or at the seller’s home or workplace. You don’t need to be there.
