Used Peugeot and Citroën inspection

Peugeot and Citroën pre-purchase inspection

Peugeots and Citroëns are comfortable and good value, but a few known problems can turn a bargain into a big bill. The 1.2 PureTech petrol belt and the AdBlue system on diesels top the list.

Known problems

What goes wrong on a used Peugeot and Citroën

Common on Peugeot 208, 308, 2008, 3008, 5008 and Citroën C3, C4, C5 Aircross, Berlingo. Not every car has these faults. They're what we look for.

1.2 PureTech timing belt

The 1.2 PureTech petrol used from about 2013 has a belt that runs in oil and can break up, blocking the oil pick-up and starving the engine. Stellantis has offered extended cover in some cases, so ask a dealer about the car you’re looking at.

AdBlue faults on BlueHDi diesels

AdBlue tanks and pumps can fail, bringing up a warning that the car won’t start after a set number of miles.

Injector seals and turbos on older 1.6 HDi

Older 1.6 HDi diesels can leak at the injector seals and starve the turbo of oil.

DPF additive

Many older Peugeot and Citroën diesels use an additive tank for the particulate filter, which needs topping up at service.

Electronic parking brake

Models like the Citroën C4 Picasso are known for electronic parking brake faults.

Questions

Peugeot and Citroën inspection FAQs

Should I buy a used Peugeot with the 1.2 PureTech engine?

Only with a clear service history using the right oil, and ideally with the belt checked or changed. We look for oil warnings and ask for the paperwork.

What does “starting impossible” mean on a Peugeot diesel?

It usually means an AdBlue system fault. The car counts down miles until it won’t start. We record the warning and the codes.

How much does a used Peugeot and Citroën inspection cost?

From £69.99 for Basic up to £169.99 for Ultimate. The price is fixed, with no travel charge, in London.

Can you inspect a used Peugeot and Citroën at the dealer or a private seller?

Yes. The inspector comes to wherever the car is, on a forecourt or at the seller’s home or workplace. You don’t need to be there.
